Composting is more than simply piling up leaves and
food scraps—there is a science behind creating healthy,
nutrient-rich compost. Designed for homeowners and
backyard gardeners, this workshop covers the basics
of how compost works, the right balance of materials,
and practical methods for successful home composting.
Through a hands-on demonstration, you’ll explore hot
and cold composting, compare compost bin options,
learn common do’s and don’ts, and discover how
finished compost can improve soil health, nourish gardens,
and reduce household waste. This class is taught by Bob
Bransky, Advanced Master Gardener, Master Composter,
and Master Rain Gardener with Michigan State
Extension. An avid gardener and musician, Bob enjoys
sharing his gardening knowledge through both theory
and hands-on practice.
