Certified Medication Aid

This training program includes 80 hours of lecture/lab and 80 of clinical experience.  Successful completers of these training will be prepared to sit for the Certification Test through Headmaster LLP, which includes a knowledge exam and skills test. Fees for this test and assistance in preparing for the test are included in the training. Successful completion of this exam is required to become a licensed Certified Medication Aid.

*Certified Medication Aides administer regularly scheduled medication to residents of nursing homes of skilled nursing facilities while under the supervision of a registered professional nurse. Certified Medication Aides CANNOT administer controlled substances, injectable forms of medication, initial administration of medications, or as needed medication (Michigan Public Health Code 333.21905, Mar 7, 2024).

Students MUST meet the following criteria before registering for this training:
  1. Hold a current registration to engage in practice as a nurse aide (CNA) and have worked as a nurse aide in a nursing home or skilled nursing facility for at least 2,000 hours during the 2-year period immediately preceding the date that the applicant will apply to the state for medication aide certification
  2. Able to read, speak, and write English
  3. Competent in basic mathematics skills
  4. Earned a high school diploma or successfully passed the general educational development (GED) test
  5. 18 years or older
  6. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification
  7. History and Physical (See additional H & P document)
  8. Annual Tuberculosis testing (See additional H & P document)
  9. Disclosure of Covid booster and flu vaccine status (See additional H & P document)
  10. New background check.
